Each cell (firefly) slowly builds up a charge. Once it fills up, it flashes. The moment it flashes, it gives its inactive neighbors some extra charge, the moment it stops flashing, it saps some charge from its inactive neighbors. This eventually leads to the fireflies syncing up.
